The birds are a such an unexpected and peaceful blessing

We have just loved the birds, this Spring and Summer. Such a simple gift from nature during such a serious and difficult time in our lives. The best way to describe the in-common feeling of the whole family, I think, is peaceful pleasure. Mom seems to have gained a new appreciation for all of them, especially the innovative orioles that have been raiding the hummingbird feeder. We’ll try to get a picture of them hanging in a precarious position, fiddling and fussing with the cover on the feeder until it finally, magically tips up and allows them to drink from the feeder. The feeder hangs just outside the dining room window and begs us to watch in wonder, as the birds swoop in and out. It’s been such a simple joy and pleasure to see.

KilldeerThe other birds that we’ve had fun watching are the Killdeers. They are the most curious little birds, bobbing up and down…..screeching their little cry to lead you away from the nest……..little actors on their stage, faking a broken wing to lure you….or the dogs….away from their funny little nest. No wonder they have to protect their nest so diligently. The four little black and white speckled eggs are laid among the rocks that skirt the road. A little stick bedding is all that separates them from the rocks that they look so much like.

Killdeer_nestI always look carefully for the nest, each day. And then I allow the proud and committed parents to lead me around so that they can feel like they have just done something wonderful and brave in protecting their family. It’s such a fun exchange, filled with frolic and animation.

If you have a chance, stop……..listen and see if you can hear a bird……the breeze…….the rustle of the leaves……..What wonderful blessings go unnoticed in our lives…….

Thank you for the birds, God, and for our ability to notice them.
